It’s time to send the kids back to school. They need new clothes and shoes. Younger students need new school supplies. Older students need to get signed up for the classes they want. But in addition to these more common tasks, the back-to-school season can also involve a few doctors’ appointments – the family physician, the dentist, the orthodontist, the eye doctor, and yes, the dermatologist.

These appointments can’t wait until the last minute. Keep in mind that the days leading up to the first day of school are the busiest time of year for these practitioners. Why? Too many people wait until the last minute to schedule an appointment!

At some point, your son or daughter probably has approached you and said, “Oh, by the way, I need to turn in this form tomorrow morning.” That may be okay if you just have to sign a permission slip, but if your son or daughter needs a physical before being allowed to participate in school sports, for example, you’ll be out of luck. Not every last minute appointment can be accommodated before school starts, and nobody wants to watch from the sidelines just because they forgot about the physical.

Let’s be honest – students today don’t get as many excused absences as we did years ago, so pulling your son or daughter out of school for a doctor’s appointment isn’t as simple as it sounds. Before you stock up on school supplies and visit the mall to reload your child’s wardrobe, get on the phone with your doctors, make the necessary appointments and get those prescriptions filled or renewed.

  • Schedule an appointment with your primary care physician now for a physical if your child plays sports.
  • Schedule an appointment with the eye doctor now to have your child’s eyes checked and glasses adjusted.
  • Schedule an appointment with the dentist or orthodontist now for a checkup and cleaning.
  • Schedule an appointment with the dermatologist now to have your child’s skin checked and acne medicine prescription renewed.

The sooner you get these appointments on the calendar, the less hassle you and your kids will have to deal with as the first day of school approaches.
