What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a popular aesthetic skin care treatment designed to exfoliate and polish the skin, revealing a smoother, more radiant complexion.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

During treatment, fine crystals are gently blown onto the skin and immediately vacuumed away. This controlled mechanical exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface, stimulating faster skin cell turnover and improving overall skin texture and brightness.

What Does Microdermabrasion Treat?

Microdermabrasion can help:

  • Even out skin tone
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines
  • Minimize brown spots
  • Improve the look of acne scars
  • Clear blackheads and whiteheads

What to Expect During Treatment

A series of treatments is recommended for optimal results. Most patients undergo microdermabrasion twice monthly for a total of six treatments, followed by maintenance sessions every 4–6 weeks.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Microdermabrasion is ideal for patients who are new to a skin care regimen or for those looking to maintain results from more advanced treatments, such as Fraxel Laser Resurfacing or CO2 Laser.

Microdermabrasion FAQ’s

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion is not painful in any way—in fact, many patients find the treatment as relaxing and rejuvenative as getting a facial. The skin may be slightly pink for a few hours, but the pink color typically resolves within an hour or less. Makeup may be applied immediately following the procedure.

Is there downtime?

There is no downtime following a microdermabrasion, however patients are susceptible to sunburn for seven days following the treatment, so using a sunblock with an SPF of 30 every day is recommended.

How long is the treatment?

Microdermabrasion treatments range from 30–45 minutes.
