…this experience has given me familiarity and confidence in the fundamentals of medical care—benefits I have already seen pay off in medical school.
Kate Lester is a medical school student and past Gap Year Program participant.
When I started at Epiphany, I already knew I wanted to pursue medical school to become a doctor. But, I left with an assurance and confidence in this career path that far surpassed what I had when I began. I grew in my ability to interact with patients, learning to treat them with the respect, kindness, and compassion they deserve. Most importantly, I confirmed that I am passionate about medicine and love coming into the clinic each day to treat patients and work as part of a team.
During a medical school interview, I had the opportunity to discuss my patient care experience at Epiphany in depth. Students who enter professional school immediately following graduation typically do not have many hands-on patient care hours, due to the time constraints. My interviewers were pleasantly surprised to hear about the hours I had accumulated while working at Epiphany. Most importantly, this experience has given me familiarity and confidence in the fundamentals of medical care—benefits I have already seen pay off in medical school.
Yes! Throughout my time at Epiphany, I worked with roughly a dozen different doctors and physician assistants, and I truly believe that experience was invaluable to my learning process. Each new provider brought a different perspective on patient care and treatment—and they all loved to teach. In addition to garnering varied perspectives, I was also mentored by the physician I primarily worked with, for which I will be forever grateful.
I can honestly say that I would recommend this gap year medical assistant position—and Epiphany as a company—to everyone. For me, the hardest part was adjusting to the different providers’ preferences, but I grew immensely in flexibility, adaptability, and attention to detail. At the end of the day, I loved it!
My advice would be to apply! And if you are hesitant because you lack prior dermatology experience, let me help ease those fears: Epiphany provides excellent training, and all the providers approach the learning process with grace, tact, and kindness. Finally, I cannot overemphasize the advantages I have experienced thus far in medical school because of my experience as a medical assistant at Epiphany Dermatology.
