Q&A with Jamie Robb, FNP-C

I had the opportunity to get my start in dermatology by signing with Epiphany right out of my NP training program. I completed a rotation in the Epiphany Farmington, NM, clinic in northern New Mexico near the town I grew up in. I knew this was my chance to get into the amazing field of dermatology and move back to the southwest where my family and I wanted to be. This meant that my family and I dropped everything and relocated to Texas for a year to train with the company’s CMO, Dr. Todd Plott. There are some times in life when an opportunity looks you in the eyes and you have to take a leap of faith. My story with Epiphany is like that, I had one shot to get into dermatology. I found an amazing company that could invest in me and I never looked back.

Working with Dr. Plott taught me a great deal more about practicing dermatology than just the nuts and bolts of diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Plott taught me how to work an exam room; how to enter, how to exit, how to make a joke and break the ice. He showed me how to solve issues that come up during a busy clinic day and how to keep things running smoothly. He taught me how to interact with patients in a way that they felt cared for. He makes sure each patient leaves the encounter feeling like they got a little bit of extra value beyond what they had anticipated. These are the types of things I didn’t learn in school, they come through real mentorship with successful people.

When I was training in the Fort Worth area, there was a moment early on where I said to myself, “Wow, I can’t believe I am here.” Not only did I get to work in some of Epiphany’s busiest practices with Dr. Plott, I also spent time in a handful of other practices learning from other great physicians, all of whom really wanted to see me succeed. There are no other training programs that I know of that rotate the NP or PA through so many clinics. In this way, I was able to pick up many different nuances in practice style and broaden my knowledge of clinical dermatology.

The training with Epiphany has been very strong. It gave me the confidence to practice dermatology as an NP in a very rural market. I was able to come out of the training year and start building a caseload quickly. I am now able to see the volume of patients I would like and successfully transition to independent practice. There are ample learning opportunities at Epiphany, from an annual companywide retreat to Friday textbook sessions hosted by one of our Market Medical Directors.

One of the things Epiphany does really well is partnering the NP or PA with a supervising physician who has a contractual obligation to oversee and assist you. I have a great supervising physician, Dr. Jorge Roman, who I can talk to throughout the week, anytime. It’s really important to have this level of support and I don’t think everyone has that in medicine. Epiphany has cultivated a collegial atmosphere among providers and it’s a place where you feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself.
