What to Do

1. Know Your Budget

Before your consultation, know what you can afford to do. Then be willing to talk to your doctor about what it’d take to get a full correction. Many times, it takes several syringes of filler to get the correction you’re hoping for — and that
gets expensive. But, if you can only afford a little, it’s okay to start with that amount. Then you can always get more as finances allow.

Also, be willing to discuss your budget with your doctor. Maybe hiding your budget seems like a smart move or maybe you’re embarrassed to admit your limits, but it’s best to be up front. If you tell your doctor what you can afford, they can help you
plan for getting the most from your investment.

2. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medication and Drinks

Anytime you have an injection, bruising is a possibility, even though we try to avoid it. So, to do your part in minimizing bruising, avoid products that cause your blood to thin in the two weeks leading up to your injections. This includes Advil,
Aspirin, St. John’s Wart, and even red wine. When you stay away from those products, you ensure a better outcome that leaves you looking as natural as possible after your procedure.

3. Come With Clean Skin

We want to administer the injections into clean, product-free skin. So shower before your appointment and come without makeup.

4. Eat

Enjoy a good meal before your injection. Sometimes, if people haven’t eaten, they can feel weak or faint with the injections. So have a regular lunch or breakfast before your appointment.

What to Expect

As you prepare for your appointment, it’s easy to get so consumed with the process you forget to prepare for the results. So ask your doctor to help you prepare for your change in appearance. They can show you photos and give you a description of
how you will look. They can also pull your skin back to give you a visual.

Realistic expectations are important. You don’t want to be disappointed by the results. If you need more filler than you can afford at once, understand that it may be a work in progress.

During the Procedure

To administer injections, we use needles to deliver the product down on the bone. Naturally, there will be a little discomfort. So how comfortable are you with pain? Do you need a local numbing cream prescription or a medication to help you relax?

But remember, no visit is completely free of discomfort. Even with medication, the procedure may be associated with minor pain.

After the Procedure

After your filler injection, you’ll likely see some swelling around the jawline. The body often produces fluid that collects around the fillers temporarily. In the jawline, this swelling is usually minimal.

Remember, we’re putting a thick, gel-like substance into your skin. It’s normal to feel the filler for several weeks after your injection. But although it will feel like a sore bump to you, it won’t look like a bump to other people.

Also, before you leave your appointment, make sure you know when to see your doctor again. We like to see patients two weeks after the procedure to check how they’re doing and find out if they need any other procedures or touch-ups. So make sure you
know how to follow up with your provider in the weeks following your procedure.

Side Effects

Slight bruising and tenderness are normal with a filler injection, but 99% of the time there are no other problems. Most people really enjoy their filler results. It softens up after a few weeks and stays for a long time.

In rare cases, people will suffer from biofilm — an inflammation that forms around the gel, which can be painful. To avoid this, we clean the skin thoroughly before we put the gel in, but it can occasionally happen regardless of precautions.

Also, in rare situations, these fillers can find their way into the veins. If that occurs, your injector should be able to handle the situation by applying a product that dissolves the filler in that area.
